Lagoon Construction in Southern Oklahoma
A sewer lagoon can be a practical and cost-effective solution for rural properties where a conventional or aerobic septic system is not the right fit.
At Standard Construction and Environmental, we design and build lagoons of all sizes for homeowners, landowners, and agricultural operations across Southern Oklahoma.
We are a licensed Sewer Contractor in the State of Oklahoma and we handle the process from site evaluation through final construction so it is done right and meets state requirements.
What Is a Waste Lagoon?
A waste lagoon is a large, engineered holding basin designed to contain and naturally treat wastewater over time.
They are commonly used on rural properties, farms, and acreage where lot size, soil conditions, or the volume of waste produced makes a traditional septic system impractical or not permitted.
Lagoons work by allowing natural biological processes to break down organic waste. Bacteria and sunlight do most of the work over time, gradually treating the wastewater as it sits in the basin.
They are not the right solution for every property, but for the right situation they are durable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective compared to more complex treatment systems.
LAGOON VS OTHER SEPTIC SYSTEMS

When is a lagoon the right choice?
Lagoons are generally used when other systems are not a practical option.
Common scenarios include:
- Large rural or agricultural properties that produce more wastewater than a standard septic system can handle
- Properties where soil conditions do not support a conventional drain field or aerobic spray system
- Farms, ranches, or operations with livestock waste management needs
- Remote properties where access and maintenance of complex systems is a challenge
- Situations where lot size and setback requirements make lagoon placement feasible
If you are not sure whether a lagoon is the right fit for your property, call us for a site visit and we can help you evaluate your options.
How a Lagoon is Designed and Built.
A properly constructed lagoon is not just a hole in the ground. It is an engineered system that has to meet Oklahoma DEQ requirements for size, depth, liner, setbacks, and placement relative to water sources and property lines.
Here is how the process typically works:
- Site evaluation to assess soil conditions, topography, and available space
- System design based on the volume of wastewater the lagoon needs to handle
- Permit coordination with Oklahoma DEQ
- Excavation of the basin to the required dimensions
- Compaction and lining of the basin to prevent groundwater contamination
- Inlet pipe installation and final grading around the lagoon
- Inspection and sign-off before the system is put into service
Every lagoon we build is designed to meet state standards and sized correctly for the property it serves.
DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

sewer LAGOON MAINTENANCE
One of the advantages of a lagoon system is that ongoing maintenance is relatively simple compared to mechanical treatment systems. That said, there are things you need to stay on top of to keep it functioning properly.
The lagoon should be inspected periodically for erosion around the banks, vegetation growth that could compromise the liner, and any signs of overflow or unusual odor that might indicate the system is being overloaded.
Over time sludge will accumulate at the bottom of the lagoon and will eventually need to be removed. How often that is needed depends on the volume of waste the system handles and the size of the basin.
We can advise you on what to watch for and what a reasonable maintenance schedule looks like for your specific system.
Lagoon Maintenance and Long Term Performance
LICENSED CONTRACTOR
Sewer lagoon construction in Oklahoma is regulated by the Oklahoma Department
of Environmental Quality. Systems have to be designed and built to specific
standards to protect groundwater and neighboring properties.
Standard Construction and Environmental holds Septic and Sewer Contractor
License #802, which covers subsurface systems, lagoon construction, and aerobic
spray systems. We also hold Soil Profiler License #046. We build both small and
large sewer lagoons and understand the permitting process, the design
requirements, and what it takes to get a lagoon approved and built correctly
in Southern Oklahoma.
Working with a licensed contractor is not just about following the rules. It
protects you from having to tear out and redo work that was not done to code,
and it gives you documentation that the system was built properly if you ever
need to sell the property.
